Dear Reader:

I suppose we should be glad that U.S. GMAT testing volume (and by implication business school applications) is trending downward. After all, if conventional wisdom holds true, it suggests an abiding faith in the economic recovery among young professionals, who in years past have shown a reluctance to apply to B-school when the economy is strong, or at least moving in that direction.

Still, it doesn't make things any easier for schools. As Alison Damast reports, many are now scrambling for applicants, if for no other reason than it helps maintain their selectivity. It's a Catch 22: one of the best ways to consistently attract applicants is to consistently reject them.
