In the last few years, entrepreneurship coursework, business plan competitions, and interest in launching startups has exploded. But as Victoria Black reports, it's a hard row to hoe, even for the most promising startup ideas. Victoria tracked down the winners of the 2007 Rice Business Plan Competition to find out what happened to the startup ideas that won over the judges. She discovered that after five years (albeit some of the most difficult years on record for the U.S. economy) more than half of these very promising businesses had shut down-a figure that's roughly in line with previous competition winners and with startups more broadly. So if your chances of making a go of it are no better than the odds your first novel will be a blockbuster, why all the excitement about entrepreneurship? No doubt there's something to be said for building a business from scratch, and being your own boss. There may even be something ennobling about failure. I just hope all these young men and women who are taking the road less traveled understand what may await them at the end.
